Obituary for Edward S. Spence
Edward Samuel Spence, age 72, of Knox, Indiana passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family on Thursday, 30 Dec 21. Ed was born 16 Mar 1949, in Swedesboro, New Jersey, one of eight children of the late Elmer and the late Ella Spence.
Ed graduated from Kings Way High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1969. Ed married Ramona (Ruth) Santos in 1970 and they spent the rest of his USAF career assigned to numerous bases throughout the world. Ed was a Crew Chief on a number of fighter jets and at the end of his career was assigned to the U2 spy plane at Beale AFB, CA where he retired in 1989. Ed lived in Knox, Indiana for seven years where he was a member and served for four years as the Post Commander of the Knox American Legion #131.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, and children: Natalie Stephens (deceased), Paul Pilant (wife Jennifer Pilant), Cherie Barnett (husband Timothy Barnett) and Tammy Trauger (husband Russell Trauger). As well as his grandchildren, Drew Stephens, Kyle Stephens, Conor Pilant, Brianna Barnett, Reid Barnett, Kristi Trauger, Wade Trauger, and great granddaughter Emery Barnett.
The memorial service was held privately to immediate family only at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home (574)772-4211 in Knox, Indiana. In leu of sending flowers, donations could be sent to the Indiana Veterans’ Home by contacting their Community Services Director, Tom Smith, at 765-497-8512 (office), 765-421-1095 (cell), or via email at ToSmith@ivh.in.gov.
