Obituary for Vera Ellen Krsek
Vera Ellan Krsek, age 92, of Knox, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Vera was born February 26, 1928 in North Judson, Indiana to Henry Schacht and Martha Huebner Schacht. On November 22, 1952 in North Judson, she married Joseph Paul Krsek. He preceded her in death on July 29, 1990. She is survived by her children, Shirley Kelly (Paul) of Knox, Sue Bowe (Dennis) of Harvard, IL, and Steve Krsek (Terry) of Knox, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by seven sisters and three brothers.
The following are thoughts and memories of Vera from her grandchildren;
“With firm, yet loving grace Vera instilled typical German practices such as timeliness, cleanliness, and using our indoor voices. While not all of those values stuck with us at home, we knew early on to respect them at Grandma’s house. Living next door was every kid’s unrealized dream. A typical weekend sleepover as a grandchild of Vera (and our Grandpa Joe) was nothing short of homemade malted milkshakes, dancing to Polka music in the kitchen with laughter, and the feeling that your feet would never touch the ground with Vera leading the way. Her brilliant but classic cooking often led us to her kitchen over our option at home, although there were occasional times when a bowl of cereal would suffice. When she told you she was preparing pig brains or beef tongue for dinner, she wasn’t joking. But, if you were daring enough, there was always an open seat at the table. I don’t recall ever taking her up on the offer of the more exotic meals, but dessert was rarely a missed opportunity as her nut rolls and apple squares were worth fighting for!”
“Vera was always very active. Whether she was taking a walk, gardening, playing catch with her grandchildren, riding her bike, or gathering the family to a competitive game of cards. She also saw the beauty in the still and quiet of rocking in a swing outside, watching birds and listening to nature.”
“She always encouraged independence, excellence, to be polite, and to exhibit pride. These values she taught, but also fiercely lived by her whole life. Thank you for the lessons, the lifestyle, and most of all, the love.”
A graveside service will take place Friday, March 20, 2020 at 2pm (CT) at Highland Cemetery in North Judson. M.C. Smith Funeral Home in handling arrangements.
