Obituary for Timothy P. Brettin

Timothy P. Brettin, age 82, of Knox, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024 surrounded by family in his home. Tim was born February 26, 1942 in LaPorte, Indiana to Edward Brettin Sr. and Nora (McBride) Brettin. Tim was a United States Army veteran (1960-1962), serving his country post-war during the Berlin Crisis in Germany.

He was very involved in his community and various community organizations, such as, member of the congregation of St Peter Lutheran church in North Judson, Starke County Historical Society, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, congregational chairman, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Sunday School teacher, a long time Bass Lake Lions member, International Lions, Melvin Jones Fellow Distinguished Service Award recipient, treasurer Starke County Republican Party, Washington Township Volunteer firefighter. He retired from Bethlehem Steel as an Electrical Supervision/Forman. After his retirement, He joined a Lutheran men’s group, Laborers for Christ. A Christian-based group of Lutheran men who together, built Lutheran church facilities, schools, and refurbished homes.

The family was a Christ-centered home, with two parents and hard working. Tim was a servant of the Lord, and a giving servant of time and talents. Tim was always willing to give someone a helping hand or encourage them to do anything they needed.

He and his wife, Peggy, were life-time sweethearts. They married on August 25,1962. However, the two attended church and Sunday School together, confirmed together, and this year they were married 62 years together. In fact, they were in choir together, and in a youth organization in the church too.


He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Marks) Brettin, also surviving are their four sons, Timothy P. Brettin II (Ritta) of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, Scott D. Brettin of Troutman, North Carolina, Keith A. Brettin (Valarie) of Mooresville, North Carolina and Michael S. Brettin of Valparaiso, Indiana, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica, six brothers and a sister, Edward Brettin Jr., Francis “Bill” Brettin, James Brettin, John Brettin Sr., Richard “Dick” Brettin Sr., Matthew Brettin and Margaret “Marge” Schuster.

A visitation will take place Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 4-7:30pm (CT), with a Lions Club Memorial Service at 7:30pm at M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox. Funeral services will take place at St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Judson on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 11am (CT), with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial with military honors will follow at the Bass Lake Lutheran Cemetery in Knox.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bass Lake Lions Club or the St. Peter Lutheran School.
