Obituary for Thomas J. Carey

Thomas John Carey, born October 2, 1940, age 83, son of the late Irene M. (nee Howley) and Michael T. Carey. Husband of Mary T. Carey (nee Newmes) passed away peacefully at home on October 1, 2024.

Tom was a retired Union Truck Driver for 38 years in Chicago. Upon retiring in 1998 he relocated to Bass Lake, IN. He lived there happily and called it home ever since. After becoming a resident of Indiana, he often complained about the tourists, which he once was!

Tom is survived by his wife Mary, sons Michael E. (Mary Beth), Thomas J. (Misty) and Lawrence K. (Genevieve); 6 grandchildren, Michael E. (Erica) aka Moose Jr., Thomas M. (Laura) aka The Duck, Rebecca A. aka The Little Indian, John P. aka JP, Samantha L. aka The Little Rascal and Brian J. aka Jake and 2 step granddaughters Sarah Mueller and Paige Eggert and great grandchildren Mason M.S. and Thomas D (Tiny)Carey and step great grandchildren Raymond J. (Joe) Clemens and Ruby Clemens; and sister Bridget M. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Tom enjoyed kicking back and relaxing with his children and grandchildren. Tom and Mary proudly raised their grandsons Tom and John. He encouraged, supported and taught his children and grandchildren many things including when to behave and when to misbehave! While raising his grandsons Tom and Mary went to all the boys’ activities such as Taekwondo and band and volunteered for the Knox Redskin Brigade.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 2-8 pm (CT) at M.C. Smith Funeral Home 153 E. Washington St. Knox, IN.

Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 10:00am (CT)at St. Dominic Mission 10440 E. State Road 23, Walkerton, IN. Catholic burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois will immediately follow. Memorial donations may be directed to Redskin Brigade % Knox High School Knox, IN.
