“One More Day”
Even with our progress
Some things stay the same
Cattle still need brandin’
There are horses yet to tame
Cowboys will always ride
They’ll head, heal and haze
Making lasting memories,
These are their “good old days”
As the lonesome sun is setting
On our last sky of blue,
We’ll think back on good times and friends
Who helped make dreams come true
The only favor I would ask
Before I am called away,
Is let me be a cowboy
Again for one more day.
Terry Lyman White, age 67, of Knox, Indiana passed away peacefully at the Center for Hospice on Sunday, May 25th, 2024 with his family by his side. Terry loved to lend his hand to anyone in need and passed down the idea that “you can never go poor by giving” to his family.
Terry was born in Plymouth, Indiana in 1957 to Cedric L. White and Rosemary Crump White, owners of the Lightning Dude Ranch at Bass Lake. He learned the value of hard work and making experiences in life memorable from his parents. Terry loved to make others happy and really cherished the time he spent traveling in Illinois to bring people to enjoy the summers at the Horse Palace for audiences to enjoy. He learned how to cook from his mother, Rosemary, and he enjoyed cooking meals and doing hog roasts for friends and family over the years.
In 1975, Terry graduated from Culver Community High School. He chose to become an entrepreneur and started his businesses, Johnny on the Spot portable toilets and Terry White Excavating. He was well-known for being a great businessman and could do any task that was asked of him. He valued quality and loyalty and made sure to help his customers in the best way he could.
Terry met the love of his life, Linda Lynch, in 1981 and they had their one and only child, Dana Lynn. The sun set and rose on Dana in Terry’s eyes. In a matter of no time, he had Dana driving tractors and helping with the family businesses, just like he did as a child. He instilled his hard work ethic and empathy for others onto his daughter.
Although Terry loved the outdoors and being a businessman, his favorite role was that of a grandpa to Jackson and Jameson. Terry cherished his time with them and showed them what it was like to be a true cowboy. He emphasized the importance of tackling each day with courage, being prideful of your work, always finishing what you start, do what has to be done, be tough but fair, talk less and say more, remember that some things aren’t for sale, and know where to draw the line. His grandkids were the only thing that could put a smile on his face instantly even when he was in pain.
Friends meant the world to Terry, most of his many stories involved adventures with his friends. He knew absolutely everyone in the community and would drop everything to help them out if they were in need. He always told his daughter that, “we all put our clothes on the same way every day, nothing makes anyone better than anybody else.” If people didn’t have a place to go for Thanksgiving, it was nothing for Terry to put an extra place setting at his table for those that needed a family for the holiday. There will be a tremendous void in the community without Terry’s big heart.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Cedric and Rosemary White, his brother, Robert White, and his sister, Patty White. He is survived by his former wife, Linda White, his daughter, Dana Bush (Nathan), his grandchildren, Jackson and Jameson Bush, his sister, Pam Smith (Steve), his nephew, Mike Garland (Amy) and their children, Kyle Garland (Dakota), Katie Dalton (Stone), and Avery Garland, his nephew Dennis Garland and his child, Colby Garland, and his nephew Alan White.
A celebration of life hog roast will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 2:00pm (CT) at the Bass Lake Pub and Ristorante. Please come and support the family and share your favorite memories of Terry.
