Obituary for Mathew Swanson
Mathew R. Swanson, age 87, of Knox, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015 at his home. Mat was born December 11, 1927 in Streator, IL to Ralph and Marian (Schonts) Swanson. He was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force. From a very young age he worked the family farm with his father at Bass Lake. In 1961 he went to work for the Federal Land Bank, spent many years as Manager at the Winamac office, retiring after 24 years as Regional Vice President. He then went to work for American State Bank in North Judson, retiring as President in 1994. Mat was a very active community volunteer and was especially involved with the following: Past President and long time board member of the Starke County Economic Development Foundation, Board of directors of Ancilla College and a member of the Ancilla Presidents Council, Charter member of the Starke County Community Foundation and Finance Committee Chair and board member of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation, a charter member of the Starke United Board, a director with the Starke County Fine Arts Foundation, a member of the Knox School re-organization board, Purdue AG Alumni Assoc., and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a recipient of the Henry Schricker Award and was the first recipient of the Hamilton Award. In 1949 he married Marilyn Irgang, she survives. Also surviving are his children, Ralph Swanson (Karen) of Bass Lake, David Swanson of Bass Lake, Andrea Kary of Bass Lake, Marta Canada (James) of St. Louis, MO, and Laurie Auzenne (Dudley) of Houston, TX, a sister, Sally Lewis of Bass Lake, and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nancy Swanson. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015 from 4-8pm (CT) at M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015 at 11:00am (CT) at M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Bass Lake Cemetery.
