Lorene Alice Scholz of Knox, Indiana, passed away on October 4, 2025. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, as well as a friend to many. She was born on August 24, 1926, in Starke County, Indiana, to Helen Hardel and Fritz Kulske. She was raised and went to school in San Pierre, graduating from San Pierre High School. She worked for several years at the San Pierre Post Office before marrying Ralph Scholz on August 8, 1948, and moving to Valparaiso.
She returned to San Pierre in 1950 to start a family, and then moved to Knox in 1962 when Ralph accepted a teaching and coaching position at Knox Junior High School. Together, Lorene and Ralph had five children: Garry, Allison, Robert, Jean, and Alex (aka Gregg). After her children left home, Lorene worked as an educational aide in the local school system and then as a physical therapy aide at Starke County Memorial Hospital, a position she enjoyed very much.
Lorene was active for many years in the local Knox PEO chapter and was a faithful member of St Luke’s Church in San Pierre, and later Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Knox. In retirement Lorene and Ralph traveled extensively, both domestically and internationally. These experiences provided Lorene with many stories she shared with her children and grandchildren.
Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Warren Kulske, and her husband Ralph. She is survived by her five children, as well as by 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am (CT), October 30, 2025, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Knox with a service to follow at 11:00 am (CT). Burial will be at the San Pierre Cemetery following the service. A luncheon at Our Redeemer will follow the burial service. Arrangements are being handled by the M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in her memory.
