Obituary for Kiyoko "Kiyo" Ikeda
Kiyoko Ikeda passed away on Thursday July 25 at the age of 98 in Walnut Creek, CA, where she spent the latter years of her life to be near family. She is survived by her brothers, Kingo and Chosei; daughters Martha (Steven) of North Carolina, Peggy living in Japan, and Kathryn (Rick) of California as well as two granddaughters (Kristen Kiyoko & Jaqueline); and four great grandchildren (Madison Kiyoko, Juliet, Naya & Laith). She will be laid to rest in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Kiyoko was born in Japan in 1921, but at 3 mos. returned to her family in the US. After her family was forced into an internment camp following the attack on Pearl Harbor, her three brothers volunteered to fight for the United States during WWII, one of whom served with the 442nd Infantry, was killed in Italy and is currently buried in Arlington Cemetery.
She and Giichi Ikeda were married in 1947 and resided in Knox, IN where they raised their three daughters. Kiyo was dedicated to public service, serving as deputy clerk for Starke County for 19 years followed by being elected for County Clerk for the next eight years. She also served on the Starke County Council for seven years, and was a 4H leader for 45 years. She was honored to be named a Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor a civilian can receive from the governor of Indiana.
In addition to her public service, Kiyo’s family is her greatest legacy. She loved her great grandchildren and held them to her last days. We honor your sacrifices and wish you eternal peace and rest.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may please be made to Knox Senior Center.
