Obituary for John E. "Jack" Milner
John E. "Jack" Milner, age 93, of Knox, passed away December 6, 2015. Jack was born February 17, 1922 in LaPorte, Indiana to the late Albert "Dutch" and Dorothy Jensen Milner, both deceased. He is survived by his brothers, Jim Milner of Knox, Charles Milner (Dorothy) of Knox, Bill Milner (Rosie) of Westville, IN, and a sister Mary Ann Niblick of Port St. Lucie, FL, special cousins, Vivian Lundstrom and Benny Warren (Alice) both of Knox, numerous nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Helen Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Milner and his two children, Donna Lynn Milner Wamsley and John Milner Jr. He was a United States Army Veteran of WWII having served from 1942-46. He was a charter member of the Knox VFW Post 748 and a member of Knox American Legion Post 131. Jack retired in 1986 after 28 consecutive years serving in public offices in Starke County. He has held the following offices: Starke County Council 1959-62, County Clerk 1963-1970, County Auditor 1971-78, and County Clerk 1979-86. There have been a number of things that Jack was instrumental in bringing to Starke County; in 1976, while Auditor, he was responsible for securing PERF (Public Employees Retirement Fund) for all county workers, and it is still being used today, in 1966, during his first term as county Clerk, he obtained voting machines, while he was Auditor the old jail and sheriff's office was constructed and in his retirement he was able to take part in the ground breaking for the new Starke County Jail and Justice Center and see the construction completed. Jack would always say: "Starke County has been good to me." Visitation will be Thursday, December 10, 2015 from 4:00 to 8:00pm (CT) at M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday, December 11, 2015 at 11:00am at M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Bass Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Donna Lynn Milner Wamsley and John E. Milner, Jr. Scholarship Funds at the Knox High School.
