Obituary for Iris M. Hyland
Iris Madonna Hyland age 98, Culver, loving mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother, aunt, sister and friend to many, passed into the arms of her Savior at 2:30 AM, Sunday, May 22, 2022 at home with her daughter Debbie.
Iris was born in Culver, to Mary (Howell) and William H. Crossgrove on April 6, 1924. She grew up in Culver and graduated from Culver High school. She married Harvey Hyland Jr. in June of 1943 and moved to Chicago to live with Harvey’s parents while he served in the Army Air Corp. In 1948 the family moved to Bass Lake and lived there for 13 years until Harvey’s passing.
She was a former member of the Bass Lake Lions Club and a lifetime member of the Culver VFW Post 6919. Iris spent most of her working years in county government. First in Starke County and ending in Marshall County. She worked in the auditors, assessor’s and clerk’ offices. In 1985 she retired from the position as bailiff of Superior Court for Judge R. Alexis Clarke.
After her retirement she spent time between Florida and Indiana saying that she was torn between the two states, wanting to be near her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family who she adored. Her happiest days were spent with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Her last months were filled with many visits from her great-grandaughters, Eleanor and Magdalena Voter. Her eyes would light up when she talked about them and when they came to her room to share their toys or have a tea party, she smiled and remembered their time together after they went home.
Preceding her in death are her parents, husband Harvey Hyland Jr., and sisters Maxine Bailey and Gloria Goble.
She is survived by her children, Sandra “Sandy” and Larry Sayler of Auburndale, FL, Harvey “Alan” and Kay Hyland of Culver, IN, and Debra “Debbie” Noel of Culver, IN, brother Bill Crossgrove of Osceola, IN and sister Coleen Hampshire of Auburn, IN.
