Obituary for Irene Patricia Barthold
Irene Patricia Barthold, age 97, of Crown Point, formerly of Bass Lake, passed away Friday, May 1, 2020 at St. Anthony Home in Crown Point. Irene was born June 28, 1922 in East Chicago, Indiana to Michael Halas and Elizabeth Ozelie Halas, both deceased. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in East Chicago in 1940, where she was the first female drum major in the state of Indiana, she then attended the St. Margaret Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked in many fields including Graver Tank during and after WWII and Continental Steel in East Chicago, she also worked with her daughter Dorene at Krimp-Hers Beauty Salon in Highland. She was also very active outside of work and raising a family with St. Thomas Aquinas Altar-Rosary, Starke Memorial Hospital Auxiliary serving as an officer, BOA Shores Property Owners Association member and former President, VFW Auxiliary, 25 year member of Calumet Council Girl Scouts, and the Munster Woman’s Club. On November 29, 1941 she married Herman Fred Barthold at Sacred Heart Church in East Chicago, he preceded her in death on May 20, 2002. She is survived by her children, Dorene Peterson (Leonard), Betty Jo Halas, Michelle Donaghey (Tom), and Holly Kraftor (Dennis). Private family services have taken place. Burial was at Bass Lake Cemetery in Knox.
