Gary Lynn Ekart, 74, of Knox passed away surrounded by family on March 21st, 2025. Born on January 17th, 1951, to Manford and Norma Ekart, in Harrison County, Indiana. Siblings, Judy and John are both of Leavenworth. Gary was a loving husband to Patrica Ekart, since October 15th, 1996. He was an amazing father to his 5 children, Myles (Megan) Ekart of Jeffersonville, Tara (Scott) Schindler of New Albany, Jeff (Taya) Morris of Plymouth, Jennifer (Kirby) Anderson of Knox, and Valerie (Kevin) Richardson of Winamac. He also was a grandfather to 20 and a great grandfather to 6.
Gary attended Indiana University of Bloomington. Graduating in 1972 from cadet school, becoming an Indiana State Trooper until 1982. He became a State Police Detective in 1982, retiring from ISP in 1999. He then became an investigator for Starke County Child Protection Services until 2014. Gary was a Knox Center Township fireman from 1980 until 2008. During that time he was fire chief for several years. He was also a member of Starke County Alliance against Domestic Violence and Child Abuse, a softball coach, a member of the FOP and a member of the zoning board. Gary was an asset to our community and helped so many. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
