Obituary for Karen Ann Dempsey Wittig
Karen Ann Dempsey Wittig, age 64, of Knox, passed away Monday, February 12, 2018 at her home. Karen was born August 26, 1953 in South Bend, Indiana. Karen enjoyed being outdoors and was extremely active. She had a passion for travel and was able to do much of this with her family over the years. Regarding many of the places she visited, Karen had researched tremendously, and would prepare a list of activities, attractions, and restaurants. Karen loved all things pertaining to nature, and was an avid horse back-rider for years, owning and caring for many of her own horses while her boys were growing up. An athlete from a young age, Karen had an immense passion for all things encompassing health including vigorous workouts on a daily basis in addition to a careful nutrition program. Her prepared meals cannot be replicated. They were so delicious yet incredibly healthy! Karen loved being with her family and friends, “wine-time”, riding bikes, yoga, lifting weights, aerobics, long walks in nature, and cross-country skiing. During warmer months and in Las Vegas, Karen could undoubtedly be found at the pool, working on her gorgeous tan. She was always prepared with a bikini in her bag.
She had been active in Psi Ota Xi, Starke Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, was responsible for bringing the American Cancer Society “Relay for Life” to Starke County, a Cub Scout Den Mother, Coached Knox Pee Wee Soccer and T-Ball, and was an Active member of Knox United Methodist Church where she prepared Lenten Lunches for many years.
On May 4, 1974 she married Greg Wittig, he survives. Also surviving are her mother, Virginia Byrum Dempsey of Kokomo, her sons, Ryan Wittig (Taylor) of Boston, MA and Christopher Wittig (Cory) of Kailua, HI, a sister, Donna Werner (John) of Rochester, IN, two brothers, Steve Dempsey of Kokomo and Jack Dempsey of Chicago, and two grandchildren, Collin and Cameron Wittig of Kailua, HI. She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Dempsey.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 17, 2018 from 4-7pm (CT) at the Knox United Methodist Church. Funeral services will also be Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 7pm (CT) at the Knox United Methodist Church. Karen’s smile and spirit could never be matched. Her gentle voice and sweet laugh will be missed incredibly by her family and friends. The sunshine will not be as bright without her on this earth. M.C. Smith Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
